The Thales Optronics UK business was formed by the acquisition of Pilkington Optronics. Pilkington Limited formed the Pilkington Optronics company in the late 80s to manage the optronics businesses formed by Pilkington PE joint venture and the Barr & Stroud acquisition. In the 90s, Thomson CSF increased its stake in Pilkington Optronics until it became a wholly owned subsidiary. The renaming of Thomson CSF to Thales in 2000 meant that the Pilkington Optronics business became Thales Optronics. Divestments and reorganisations have occured but the Glasgow site still traces its history through the originating Barr and Stroud business in Glasgow.
